Empty Nest and Parenting Adult Kids Early Bird Forum
Tough Love, Tough Choices: How to Cope with an Empty Nest
Led by Jo Parfitt

When our expat kids leave home many leave the country too. Instead of things getting easier many unforeseen issues arise. So, what happens to your identity now? How do you care for your parents, ATCKs and your partner while still making time for yourself? What should you do when your kids drop out, get depressed or get lonely? You're getting older too, so how do you stay positive when problems rear their heads and you feel compelled to jump on a plane to sort things out?

Come listen to the wisdom of our specialist panel of mentors, educators, psychologists and parents who feel that the paragraph above describes their life. Ask your questions and help us to start an open discussion about what matters most.

This session will kick-off research into what will later become a book published by Summertime Publishing in time for FIGT 2018.

Let's start the conversation.

Panel members: Ruth van Reken, Ellen Mahoney, Becky Grappo, Katherine Fortier, Terry Anne Wilson and Jo Parfitt

Re-defining School Admissions as a Learning Experience for Families in Transition

Led by Sorcha Dempsey, Sara Sulaimani, Robin Berting, David Willows, International School of Brussels

As an international school admissions office, we are building a tribe - telling the story of our school and helping families to find their place in this story. One day we woke up and (collectively) realised that we might have been doing school admissions all wrong. Or at least part of it. So we began to imagine a very different kind of admissions experience for families in transition. This highly interactive workshop will tell the story of what happened next and actively engage participants in a range of connected ideas; from how to manage different expectations of what good learning looks like, to thinking about how a better understanding of the brain can help us appreciate the way in which families in transition make important life choices.

Early Bird Digital Living Forum
Led by Elizabeth Douet

Global connectivity is making expat and cross-border living easier and more flexible than ever before.

Easy-to-use online tools, platforms and apps are revolutionizing the ways expat workers and their families live, work, learn, earn, manage finances, get around, receive medical care, leverage assets, get advice, plan retirement … and so much more.

With so many options, technology has put an end to ‘trailing’ status - empowering everyone with opportunities to create a global living experience that meets their own terms.

Want to find out how technology is making this possible? Come to the digital living forum and discover tools and tips that make international living simpler, supportive and more personally rewarding.

This forum is both for people living internationally, and for organizations responsible for supporting a globally mobile workforce. Technology is no longer an add-on to global living, but rather an enabler of successful, flexible global living options.
