Families in Global Transition 2018 Conference

Building on the Basics: Diverse voices celebrating the past, present, and future of globally mobile lives

PPWR Submission Deadline October 1, 2017

Do you want to develop your writing and communications skills? Apply to the Parfitt Pascoe Writing Residency for a partial scholarship to the FIGT Conference in The Hague, March 8-10, 2018.

The Parfitt Pascoe Writing Residency began in 2014. It is now wholly supported and funded by Jo Parfitt and Robin Pascoe, themselves regulars at FIGT since the outset and both writers dedicated to creating and promoting content about global families in transition.

Jo and Robin want expat writers engaged in the PPWR Program to strive to be agents for social change by writing about issues outside of their own experience concerning the world of serious global dislocation.

The SIX successful scholars will receive:

  • Free tuition from writer, mentor and publisher Jo Parfitt on how to write articles for the global market and how to place them with publications. This will be conducted by means of an 8 session online course, completed by email, prior to the conference
  • Mentoring by Jo and Dounia during the conference
  • A one hour 1-1 Skype session pre-conference with Jo
  • Editing of your work prior to publication on the FIGT website, blog and newsletter
  • Full scholarships to the conference that cover the full ticket price
  • Publication of your work, with byline, in FIGT media
  • Production of all collated writing, once complete, into a book published by Summertime Publishing in both print and digital formats. Scholars receive a 2.5% royalty from subsequent sales
  • Additional help towards writing an article for publication on those living overseas in difficult circumstances (refugees, homeless, divorced, lonely, depressed).
  • Full-day of training in The Hague on the day prior to the conference (7th March)
  • Dinner together day one of conference (8th March)
  • Debrief session with dinner and guest speaker 4-10 pm on last day of conference (10th March)
  • £200 discount on all Writing Me-Treats led by Jo Parfitt, taking place from 2018 onwards, at which further tuition towards 'pushing the writing envelope' will be included (www.writingmetreats.com)
  • A list of writing markets for 'expat writers'
  • Membership of the PPWR Alumni Facebook group and Email group

In exchange, the writing scholars will provide:

  • Coverage of all FIGT sessions according to the designated format
  • At least six articles or six blog posts about the conference before the end of May 2018
  • At least 10 Facebook, Twitter or other social media posts during the conference
  • A link to all subsequent, conference-related work by all PPWR scholars posted via your own social media
  • The provision of the conference coverage text by the end of June 2018
  • Your commitment to be present in The Hague from 9am on 7th March to 10pm on 10th March 2018

    Tone Indrelid, PPWR 2017 says:

"I have been offered (and have accepted) a place on a blogging platform called The Turban Times, starting September. Their focus is on the MENA region and their aim is to publish material you don't usually find in mainstream Middle East media.  I'm just delighted with the opportunity to get back into writing about Oman, from a semi-academic angle.

While this is perhaps not a direct consequence of my FIGT participation or connections made there, I would never have picked it up without the PPWR. For starters, I wouldn't have had the guts to reach out to them suggesting an Oman section, but more importantly, I wouldn't have had much to 'sell' them on my own. So - thank you, again, for believing in me and helping me grow, so much, these past months!”

    Applications are now closed.

A big thank you to everyone who applied. Jo Parfitt will be in contact with you shortly. Questions? Please email admin@figt.org
